Residential Education Student Staff Expectations for Student Staff Training
Purpose of Expectations
The purpose of this document is to provide clear guidelines and expectations for staff members during the training period between July through August. This document aims to ensure that residential education staff members understand their roles, responsibilities, and expectations during training. This document seeks to promote professionalism, engagement, and effective facilitation of training sessions for the benefit of both staff members and within the residential communities.
Administrative Work & In-Hall Time
Administrative Time
You are expected to follow directions related to Administrative Time. This time is not a “release” early and go home. This time is created to identify specific areas and tasks for you to complete during training, including door decorations, bulletin boards, and more.
In-Hall Time
All In-Hall sessions have been created to align with the training content and curriculum. You are engaging during In-Hall time as you would during any training session.
You are expected to follow your supervisor’s direction during In-Hall time.
Assessment
You are expected to complete any training assessments so that SST and ResEd can better understand the effectiveness of training sessions.
Attendance & Participation
Familiarity with All Training Schedules
You are expected to be well-versed with the Student Staff Training Schedule. This includes the entire Student Staff Training Schedule. You should consult with your supervisor about any questions regarding the schedule. You should note the time and location of each session.
Active Participation in Training Sessions
You are expected to be present and actively engaged with all Student Staff Training Sessions including sessions you signed up for. You should be viewing this training season as training for your level of development, and you should learn something from each session.
Time Management
You are expected to allocate sufficient travel time during the training period to ensure that you are on time and ready for each session. While we built in travel time where needed, please plan accordingly moving from In-Hall Time to an out-of-Hall training session. Complete any assigned tasks by or before the deadline.
Leadership & Motivation
Engagement
You are responsible for your energy. You are expected to maintain energy and engage in the training session. If you notice yourself losing energy or motivation, consult with your supervisor, remember to hydrate and nourish your body, get enough sleep, etc.
Be Open
You are expected to approach training with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Embrace new ideas, perspectives, and feedback from both facilitators and fellow staff members. Help cultivate an environment of openness and inclusivity.
Behind Closed Doors
Participation in Behind Closed Doors
You are expected to prepare for and participate in the Behind Closed Door Sessions as determined by the facilitator. You are expected to follow directions and roles assigned by the facilitator which may include acting in a scenario.
Move-In Coordination
Coordination of Move-In
You are responsible for participating during move-in dates and times within your dorm, completing assigned tasks and roles as directed by your supervisor.
Technology Usage
Usage of Technology
You are expected to sit with your staff during sessions and role model limited use of technology to ensure full engagement. This includes being on your phone. Technology such as your personal phone should not be used unless the facilitator requests it for an activity or engagement.
During training, all the information you will need can be found on the Student Staff Training HUB. Please ensure you check the Training HUB prior to asking the committee for assistance or directions.
